Ideas that Matter: Future of Cooking


So today when you cook in your oven you
typically would follow the directions on the back of the box. You would select
bake 350 for maybe 20 minutes. In the future, our food science team has
developed some algorithms that allow you to cook very precisely based on those
food items, so if you want to cook that turkey or those brownies or that pizza
they can vary the bake and broil percentages and even the convection fan
to cook those items very precisely. One of the cool things about cooking like
this is it makes it really easy for the user so they’re not intimidated by
programming the oven. By the oven handling all these processes on its own,
the user can just focus on making that great meal. One of the things we’re looking at is cameras in some of our future products – cameras in ovens. A couple
benefits that one of the reasons is you don’t have to open the door and that
keeps all the heat inside the oven so it keeps your cooking process consistent.
The other reason that a camera might be nice is you can check the status from a
distance, so if you’re outside the room and want to look at what you’re cooking
to see if it’s done or not you can pull up your app and review the image right
there. We’re also thinking about how appliances can work together once
they’re connected in the kitchen, so imagine a scenario where you get a
frozen pizza in your freezer and your refrigerator knows it’s about to expire.
The refrigerator could let you know that it’s about to expire and if you wanted
to eat that frozen pizza, send that cook program directly to the oven preheating
it with just the right settings to make that frozen pizza the best frozen pizza it
can be. We can actually vary some of the precision cooking algorithms to make
frozen pizzas better than just cooking them in a standard bake 400. And once
that pizza is ready, the oven can tell the dishwasher to set a program to wash
that dirty pizza pan. I think in general I think the future of cooking is really
exciting. I think we’re going to see the ability for people that really don’t
know how to cook gourmet meals I think they’re going to be able to cook some
amazing dinners using some of this technology. As we’ve done a lot of
research on cooking that past one of the things we’ve learned is that people are
more likely to be healthy if they eat at home, so by investigating some of these
technologies and trying to make it easy for people to cook at home we hope we
can make them happier and healthier as well.
