Your Future is in Our District: Nutrition Service Aides

Wichita Public Schools is
a great place to work because it’s our
local community and we’re helping
feed the kids every
single day. A school kitchen
is great The amazing staff
that I work with, actually the
whole building, everybody is amazing. And then when the
children come in it makes it all
worthwhile because we’re able
to feed them the nutritious lunch
that they deserve. We’re just one
big happy family. We all work together and
everybody trusts each other. Just coming to work
every day is not like work. It’s like having fun. In my life I was ready
for a change and this fit into it. No nights, no weekends,
steady schedule. Being a mom of four children, it
works for our lifestyle. I get to have the
winter break off, Thanksgiving break,
spring break. I also have the option of
being able to work during the summer or take it off and
spend time with them. I have early hours, so I
get into work early. I get off early. So I still have the rest of
my day when I get off. The hours worked
great for me because I’m able
to be off to take care of
my grandkids when there’s no school. I’m able to make appointments
to do other things in the evening
with my husband. I get to spend time with
my kids and my grandkids at the same
school and watch them
grow up. It’s just a great
place to work for. The kids get to see me
working in the district. I know some of their
teachers and stuff so they don’t
get away with quite as much as maybe someone
else’s children do. But it just really pulled our
family together as a unit. We all take off to different
schools in the morning and come home together
and we discuss what we did
and it’s been great. The kids. That is my favorite
part…is the kids. Sometimes they come up
with the silliest things, and the personalities, just saying hi to them
every single day. Just really enjoy
working with them. The kids, they’re amazing. Seeing their faces
every day and I do latchkey and starting the fresh fruit
and vegetable program, so I am with
them a lot more than just for breakfast
and lunch, so you get a good
communication with the kids. When we start serving lunch,
we’re able to rejuvenate them, let them get their
energy back up so they can finish
the rest of the day and hopefully succeed
in the classroom. There are many children
that aren’t getting proper nutrition
outside of school. Some kids maybe go
all weekend or all evening without eating and they
come in for breakfast and it might be the first
meal they’ve had since they left us
on Friday, so just making sure that
our city’s children have the proper
nutrition to be successful is very important. By feeding them we
give them the tools to make sure they
succeed in school and succeed in life. We have a great support system. The principals, they are
always right there for us. Whatever we need,
they back us up 100%. We started a new
program last year doing the second
chance breakfast and this staff has
been amazing with it. I feel like my positive
environment that I create at my cafe makes the
students feel welcome. It’s probably the best
part of their day is eating a
school lunch. Wichita Public Schools
is a family and it’s the best
one to work for. My staff is a family. We all get along so great. Everybody comes to
work every day with a common goal. Everybody understands how
important our job is. A couple years ago
I got a note saying, from one of the kids…. saying how much they
appreciate what I do, and what, and saying
hi to them every single day. So that really made my week. If you want something that’s
gonna get you up every day and make you excited and
feel good about a job, this is the job.
